Yay! MT-Blacklist!

mtblacklist.png Being relatively new to the world of MovableType I bravely installed version 3.0D of the popular blogging software when I moved this site away from its rotten codebase I had written during civil service a few years ago.

Quickly we got hit by trackback and comment spam in a variety of forms (the latter being less of an issue since comments from unregistered visitors are moderated anyways) which made me look for a solution which would not involve turning off trackbacks alltogether since I consider those one of the most powerful addition to ‘blogging in your own little world’.

It turned out that banning the IPs of the spammers was the only solution at that time since MT-Blacklist was only compatible with MovableType 2.0x. Banning IPs though is less fortunate since it’ll also block legitimate users of hosted blog-solutions from commenting or trackbacking to your blog.

Hail Jay Allen for porting its aforementioned MT-Blacklist product to MT 3.0x (which had also won the Six Apart plugin contest for MT 3.0x) and publishing an emergency release for those of us who were sitting on MovableType 3 without any spam protection.

I installed this plugin this morning and it already blocked several spamming attacks successful.
